Outreach activities - Visits

In early december (2023), our project coordinator Dr. Luísa Magalhães went to Escola Universitária Vasco da Gama (EUVG), where she delivered a lecture to 3rd-year Bioveterinary Sciences degree students . The session was part of the curricular unit “Invertebrate Experimental Models”.

Yesterday, January 18th, the Luso-American Development Foundation awarded the FLAD Science Award Atlantic 2023 to the researcher José Paula. The event was attended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Elvira Fortunato, and the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Also present were the previous winners of the award, Rui Seabra (2021) and Luísa Magalhães (2022).

For this year’s (2024) International Oceans Day (#WorldOceanDay), our team visited an primary school to show the importance of our oceans, communicate science and demonstrate some of the work done by our researchers. The visit was organized by ECOMARE and @UnivAveiro.

Today, June 17th 2024, we received a visit from the fourth graders from Marinha Velha elementary school at ECOMARE. Our team showed how interesting and fun bivalves and parasites can be!

This week (April 2025), our ECOMARE team had the privilege of visiting EB23 José Ferreira Pinto Basto School to inspire the next generation with hands‑on insights into climate change.

On the occasion of World Oceans Day (June 8th), our team had the pleasure of participating in the 1st Symposium “Living Ocean: A Sustainable Future”, held at the João Afonso School Librar. Organized by the Escola Azul program, the event brought together students, teachers, researchers, and local authorities to reflect on the importance of ocean conservation and sustainable practices.

Our participation included attending presentations by student Ocean Ambassadors, a fascinating talk by our Project’s Supervisor Dr. Luísa Magalhães (CESAM-UA) about the Ria de Aveiro and its marine biodiversity. We are proud to support educational initiatives that promote ocean literacy and inspire the next generation to protect our blue planet.

We are delighted to welcome Vania Baptista to the FLAD Science Award Atlantic 2024 family!

Congratulations on your project, “Finding Home – Discovering the Lost Phase of Fish Species,” which promises to shed important light on critical life stages of fish that remain poorly understood. Your work has great potential to advance marine biology and fisheries science by uncovering key insights into fish development and habitat use. The entire UNTIE team extends its warmest congratulations and best wishes for success as you embark on this exciting research journey.

Students from the Basic Education degree requested that our project’s principal investigator, Luís Magalhães, lead a hands-on activity at Solposto Primary School. Throughout the year, these students have been learning about the importance of aquatic ecosystems, exploring their biodiversity and the vital roles they play in environmental health.

The interactive session allowed the students to engage directly with concepts related to aquatic life and conservation, fostering curiosity and a deeper understanding of these ecosystems. This experience supports their education by connecting classroom knowledge with real-world environmental challenges and stewardship.
